Ski Jumping: Wellinger Second – Friday brings back World Cup lead
Andreas Wellinger flew on the podium in Zakopane. The 22-year-old came second in Anze Semenic’s surprise win after a strong second run.
Richard Freitag regained the lead in the overall World Cup with tenth place. Local hero Kamil Stoch missed before 25,000 disappointed fans in what were actually irregular circumstances as 38th place. the second round.
After 119.5 m Wellinger was still in ninth place after halftime, but with 136.5 m it was still surprisingly far ahead.
With 242.0 points, only Semenic (245.6) had to admit defeat, who celebrated his first World Cup victory. Semenics compatriot Peter Prevc finished third.
Freitag, who had just had Windpech in the first round, took over the yellow jersey, which he had lost to Stoch as a result of his crash at the Four Hills Tournament in Innsbruck. With 737 points, Friday is now ahead of Stoch (733), Wellinger remains third (665).
Like Stoch, Markus Eisenbichler also retired in the first round. The Siegsdorfer, second in the qualification on Friday behind Stoch, only finished 33rd after a completely messed-up jump to 113.5 m. He was able to finish the race in second place.
Stephan Leyhe came in 13th place. The 18-year-old Constantin Schmid, still the best German in sixth place after the first round, fell back to 17th place.
Karl Geiger, who had only slipped into the second round after Stochs crash, advanced from 30th place to 21st place. Before the Winter Games in South Korea (9. till 25. February) two individual competitions are scheduled for the coming weekend in Willingen, Hesse.
