Ski Alpin: Neureuther doubts Pyeongchang launch and criticizes IOC

Germany’s alpine ski star Felix Neureuther is still considering abandoning the Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang next February and criticised the International Olympic Committee in the same breath:”I do not agree with the IOC’s line of maximising the commercialisation of the sport. This has little to do with a sports festival at which the world’s young people meet each other,”said the Partenkirchen newspaper to the Salzburger Nachrichten.

“It doesn’t always have to be higher, faster, further”, Neureuther said.In the past, there were three choices in skiing: downhill, giant slalom and slalom. The title had more value. In South Korea, you can theoretically compete in six competitions including the team competition, which is too much,”said the 33-year-old.

In view of the Korean crisis, Neureuther is still sceptical about whether he will finally be on the podium at the Olympics in February after five World Cup medals (twice team, three times singles). When asked if there was a red line for him, he replied:”Yes, there is one. There’s not much missing.”

Under the current conditions, he could not look forward to the Olympic Games,”as sport is no longer the focus of attention, but is used by politicians.Besides, it’s not just about me: My serviceman is a father of two families – should I tell him:”You have to go to a crisis region because I want to win medals there?”
