The handball rules do not change at the new season, so the fans don’t have to be prepared for changes on the record. The situation is different with regard to the matchday regulation. In future, the HBL games will only be played on Thursdays and Sundays, and in exceptional cases on Saturdays.
In addition, there is a new promotion and relegation scheme.Instead of three teams so far, only two teams from the HBL will be transferred to the second division in the future.Bundesliga and only two clubs are allowed to enter the upper house.
As in the German Soccer Bundesliga, there is a new rights package for the live broadcast of HBL for handball.Sport1 lost its rights completely and will no longer offer live games in the 2017/18 season.HBL has reached an agreement with Sky, ARD and ZDF on the largest broadcasting package in history to date. This is to be valid for six years.
It is not yet clear how exactly Sky’s broadcast – the company has so far shown the EHF Champions League – looks like.In a statement, the pay-TV broadcaster stated that at least two-thirds of all games will be broadcast live. However, the aim is to transmit all 306 games. It is also unclear whether these are then shown on TV or only partially online. In addition, it is planned to show four games in the free-to-air Sky Sport News HD.In addition, former international Stefan Kretschmar will discuss selected scenes of the match day with three guests in “Kretschmar – the handball talk” on Sunday from 5 to 6 pm.
The situation is somewhat clearer for public broadcasters.ARD, or one of the third programs, broadcasts up to twelve matches live and in full length during the 2017/18 season. In addition, ARD broadcasts the final four of the DHB Cup live.
In addition, ARD and ZDF will regularly present detailed summaries of all matches. At ARD, for example, the HBL is to become an integral part of the Sportschau am Sonntag.
In addition to the television rights, Sky, ARD and ZDF have also secured online rights for the coming years. At Sky, all games that are also shown on television are also broadcast on SkyGo, the in-house streaming service.Furthermore, some games may only be transferred to SkyGo.In this case, the SkyGo app can be downloaded from iTunes (for Apple devices) and the Google Play Store (for Android devices) on tablets and smartphones.
The same goes for the live streams from ARD and ZDF.These can be streamed via the in-house media library on the computer, laptop or a mobile device. For tablet and smartphone users, the ARD media library can be downloaded from iTunes or Google Play. The ZDF app is also available on iTunes and Google Play.
As with the premiere title in the 2015/16 season, Rhein-Neckar Löwen also secured the title in the German Handball Bundesliga in the 2016/17 season. The Mannheim team finished the championship within a few days with victories against SG Flensburg-Handewitt and THW Kiel.Flensburg finished second in the final standings ahead of Kiel.
Especially due to the dominance after the turn of the millennium, THW Kiel has become the undisputed record holder of the Handball Bundesliga.Since 2000, the zebras have won twelve titles alone. In total, the Kiel team has even won 20 championships. The THW’s strongest pursuer is VfL Gummersbach, who has long been record champion himself. However, the VfL has not won a title since 1991 and had to relinquish its rank.
With the Bergischer HC, the HBW Balingen-Weilstetten and the HSC 2000 Coburg, three teams had to make the bitter way in 2nd place after the 2016/17 season.Bundesliga.TuS N-Lübbecke, TV 05/07 Hüttenberg and TSG Ludwigshafen-Friesenheim will be competing in the highest German league at the start of the coming season. In addition to the three new teams, the first 15 teams from last season’s final standings will also be present.
