Basketball: Rödl with ten European Championship participants in the World Cup qualifying round
New national coach Henrik Rödl will start into the newly introduced World Cup qualification with ten European Championship participants and four debutants. The 48-year-old nomination of a 19-man squad for the games against Georgia and in Austria took place on Friday.
In two group phases, twelve European participants will be selected for the 2019 World Cup in China.
The first phase will end in July 2018, in which European Championship quarter-finalist Germany will play six matches and meet Georgia and Austria as well as Serbia. Three out of four teams are making progress.
Rödl, who took over the post from Chris Fleming, who retired from the post after the successful European Championship, will have to relinquish the NBA pros such as Dennis Schröder (Atlanta Hawks) at the start. The 1993 European Champion nominated the newcomers Isaac Bonga (Frankfurt Skyliners), Dominic Lockhart (BG Göttingen), Andreas Obst (Rockets Erfurt) and Joshiko Saibou (ALBA Berlin) for this award.
Patrick Heckmann, Maodo Lo and Lucca Staiger will be joined by three players from German champions Brose Bamberg, although the international matches overlap with the club’s obligations in the EuroLeague – an overview of the German Basketball Federation’s (DBB) squad:
