Handball: Champions League: Kiel declassified Brest

In the Champions League, THW Kiel has found a suitable answer to the crisis in the Bundesliga. The three-time winner of the title clearly won against the Belarusian top team HC Meshkow Brest with 33:23 (15:10) and improved his starting position in the fight for entry into the last sixteen with his fourth victory in the ninth game.

“Our defence was consistently good today, Niklas Landin played well in the goal and we also combined well and fluently in the front,”praised Kiel’s coach Alfred Gislason at Sky.

Two days after the bitter defeat at VfL Gummersbach, who was threatened with relegation, things didn’t go according to plan for the THW in the first section, but at least the setting was right.

The self-confidence grew with the clear break lead in the back, European champion Rune Dahmke met enchantingly for the 22:16. Kreisläufer Patrick Wiencek scored seven goals as the most successful player in the game.

“It’s an incredibly good feeling that we can win at this level,”said Dahmke with relief:”It can’t be that we embarrass ourselves as we did in Gummersbach. For Wiencek, too, the fluctuations in performance this season cannot be explained:”If we knew how, we would put them on hold.”

On Wednesday at 7.30 pm in the LIVETICKER, Kiel will continue in the Champions League at SG Flensburg-Handewitt. The northern rival and Bundesliga leader finished second in Group B with one game less than Kiel, but three points more. The zebras are currently in fourth place, with the first six teams qualifying for the knockout stage.
