DEL: Munich almost certainly first – Cologne climbs to fourth place
Master Red Bull Munich has almost secured the first place after the main round in the DEL. Coach Don Jackson’s team won on 48th. With 103 points, they are 12 points ahead of the Nuremberg Ice Tigers, who suffered a surprising 3-6 defeat (1-4,1-2,1-0) in the Fischtown Pinguins Bremerhaven.
Bremerhaven (72 points) is fifth with the eighth victory in the past nine games and is thus on a direct play-off place.
In the fight for the other playoff places, the Cologne sharks (73) also won 4-2 (2-0,1-2,1-1,1-0) against tail-light Straubing Tigers and are now fourth.
The Grizzly’s Wolfsburg, on the other hand, lost 3:4 (1:0,1:1,1:2,0:1) in Krefeld Piguine after the penultimate round and are now in sixth place with 71 points.
In a fiercely contested match, title favourite Munich prevailed with the goals of Dominik Kahun (1st, 56th) and Brooks Macek (46th) in Mannheim. Andrew Desjardins (9th) had scored the equaliser for the eagles.
“It was a good game with playoff character. We did the right things against strong Mannheimers in the important moments,”said Munich striker Frank Mauer at Sport1.
Due to the defeat in Nuremberg, the Eisbären Berlin (89) can move up to second place on Wednesday with a home win against the Augsburg Panthers.
