Bright in a Cell at the Little Caesar’s Arena in Detroit, Michigan was all about the two Hell in a Cell matches.SmackDown Commissioner Shane McMahon and Kevin Owens fought a big battle after weeks of intense feud, which ended with a big surprise: Owens won the match after Sami Zayn saved him from a Leap of Faith from the cell.In the opener, The Usos won the SmackDown Tag Team Championships of New Day, and Baron Corbin also won the United States Championship in a three way against AJ Styles and Tye Dillinger.
Winner: Chad Gable & Shelton Benjamin.Mojo Rawley worked as a team player for the Hype Bros. and took care of Zack Ryder both during and after the match. In view of the result in the day’s title match, the victory makes perfect sense for Gable & Benjamin to have a fresh face duo in the back of their hands, which the Champs (successfully) can demand. The question of how the Hype Bros will go on – heel-turn or split – is postponed at least until the next SmackDown issue.
Winner: The Usos by Double Superfly Splashes against Xavier Woods.Kofi Kingston had to follow the match from outside the cell, while Big E and Xavier faced the Usos.It was a battle celebrated by Holy Shit and This is awesome chants, with plenty of weapons and both teams using the cell extensively for double-team moves.Among other things, Jey Big E lifted him up on his shoulders, from where Jimmy carried him from the ropes into the cell wall. After various near-falls, the twins uncuffed handcuffs towards the end and tied Woods to the cell to work on him. With this victory, they will be rewarded for their fantastic work last year and cement their position as the WWE’s top (bright) day team. The preparation seemed like the big final of the feud, but it seems unlikely that the New Day will not receive a re-match.But if you want to take the unicorns out of the title feud for a while, you have transition challengers with Gable & Benjamin.
Winner: Randy Orton by RKO.As usual: Orton wins by RKO out of nowhere against a midcarder to be kept strong for future main-fighting and Rusev has to work for an Upper Carder, even if he has been better-booked in the last weeks.Continuing the feud doesn’t really make sense, especially since there was no aftermath.A possible next opponent for Randy would be the new US champ Baron Corbin, while Rusev will probably be stomping around in insignificance for a while.
Winner and new United States Champion: Baron Corbin after Styles Dillinger missed Phenomenal Forearm, kicked Corbin Styles out of the ring and then covered Dillinger. An important victory for Baron, who seemed to be in free fall after the unsuccessful cash-in of the Money in the Bank suitcase and the general presentation of the last few months.Generally speaking, the Midcard title is the perfect intermediate step to see how he presents himself as a champion and whether he is ready for higher tasks. The inclusion of Dillinger in this match is no surprise according to the latest results, as well as the fact that he had to take the pin.Despite the good presentation of the last few weeks, it seems unlikely that the WWE will ever make Tye Dillinger more than a mid-card jobber.Booking the finish gave Styles maximum protection, while the Lone Wolf looks more like a lucky than a deserved winner. The challenge will now be to let Corbin win the re-match without weakening styles, so that The Phenomenal One can then re-orientate itself towards the World Title.
Winner: Charlotte Flair per disqualification after Natalya attacked her with a chair.Afterwards, the championess continued with the chair on Charlotte’s damaged knee and finally described her as miserable. The fact that the two women can play top-class matches together has been proven several times, especially with NXT TakeOver 2014.Unfortunately, they were not given the time to do so.A clean victory for Natalya was not to be expected and so the DQ over brutal attacks with a weapon was without question the best choice. The feud can be continued, Charlotte has a flaw and Natty seems more aggressive.
