Cycling: British cyclists set a world record
British rider Mark Beaumont rode around the world in 78 days by bike, beating the world record by about one and a half months.The 34-year-old from Edinburgh, Scotland, arrived in Paris one day earlier than planned on Monday evening, where he arrived in Paris on 2 January.by the end of June.
“This was undoubtedly the hardest challenge I have ever faced my body and mind,” said Beaumont, who crossed the finish line after exactly 78 days, 14 hours and 14 minutes, to the BBC:”But it shows that what seems impossible can become possible.
Beaumont was inspired by Jules Verne’s famous story “In 80 Days Around the World” and travelled from France to Russia, Mongolia, China, Australia, Canada and the USA around the globe.Beaumont crossed the oceans by plane.
In order to cover the 29,000 km long route in the planned time, Beaumont had to cover almost 390 km in the saddle every day. He spent 16 hours a day driving and only had five hours of sleep.Beaumont had already improved the world record to 194 days in 2008, with the most recent record set at 123 days.
