Olympics: Controversial Hickey resigns from IOC executive board

Patrick Hickey, who was involved in the Rio 2016 Olympic ticket scandal, has resigned from the Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).The 72-year-old Irishman had been arrested by the Brazilian police in Rio and only returned to his homeland months later.Hickey denies the charges against him, according to Irish media reports his trial is scheduled for November.

Hickey is suspected of having passed on Olympic tickets from the contingent of the National Olympic Committee for Ireland OCI to the ticket and hospitality company THG for overpriced resale and enriched themselves with them.In February, Hickey resigned as OCI President.

In his statement, Hickey stressed that the IOC wants to protect and ensure that the interests of the National Olympic Committees are represented in the executive.His successor will be elected at the IOC session in Lima/Peru next week.
