Cycling: Tour of Lombardy: Petilli and Bakelants with numerous breaks

Two cycling professionals were seriously injured in the crashes during the Lombardy tour on Saturday.The Italian Simone Petilli suffered fractures of a cervical vertebra, the right collarbone and the right shoulder blade.The Belgian professional cyclist Jan Bakelants had seven rib fractures and fractures on two lumbar vertebrae.

The duo had fallen on the same downhill run as Bakelants’ fellow countryman Laurens De Plus, who managed to make it through the crash barrier in a curve 35 km from the finish line, but without serious injuries.

The victory at the last monument of the season was won by former Tour winner Vincenzo Nibali.The favourite local hero won the race after 247 km from Bergamo to Como with a clear lead of about half a minute over Julian Alaphilippe.

Third place went to Nibali’s Italian fellow countryman Gianni Moscon (Sky) as the first of a group of pursuers.
