NBA: Klay: Want to be like Jordan’s Bulls
As part of the preseason trip to China, Klay Thompson was asked how the Golden State Warriors fit in historically and whether they could follow in the footsteps of the Chicago Bulls of the Michael Jordan era.
“You’ve won six titles in eight years. So we are only one third of them,”Thompson replied,”I think we’re on our way.We still have a long way to go, but I think the fan experience is similar to the Bulls in the 90s.Whenever the bulls were in town, it was the hot ticket. Now it’s a must-see when the Warriors are in town. And we don’t take that for granted – it’s such a cool position for us.We hardly ever play in unsold halls. That’s incredible.”
The Dubs want to win the third title in the coming season within four years.Thompson made it clear that two out of three could not yet compete with the Bulls:”We are not yet on their level, but that is what we want to achieve for the 2000s.We also want to become a dynasty that fans will remember forever.”
The Shooting Guard also admitted that the comparisons with the MJ bulls were quite a challenge,”It was cool two years ago when we scored 73 victories,”says Thompson,”It’s an honour to be compared with them. That definitely motivates us.I would love to play Michael Jordan.Too bad there’s no time machine.”
However, Warrior coach Steve Kerr, who won three titles with the MJ bulls as a player, made it clear that you shouldn’t lose yourself too much in such gimmicks,”Of course, we would like to continue to be so successful. But we have to work for it and be lucky. You gotta stay healthy to get the lucky bounces. We’ll do our best and enjoy the journey.”
