MLB: Yankees Manager Girardi: Must protect Severino
Is there a controversy between Yankee manager Joe Girardi and his star pitcher Luis Severino?Girardi took the starter from Match 2 against Houston Astros after four innings and then spoke of a possible injury. But Severino didn’t want to know about it.The series will be continued on Tuesday in New York, game 3 will be shown at SPOX in LIVESTREAM FOR FREE starting at 2 am.

With 31 starts and an ERA of 2.98, Severino was the Yankees’ best pitcher in the regular season. The 23-year-old Righty was supposed to give the Yankees a chance to equalise in game 2 of the ALCS.And Severino did that at least properly, allowing only one run in the first four innings. With only 62 pitches, he would normally have been able to contest one or two inning.
Instead, in manager Girardi withdrew after the fourth inning in the match. Was it because Severino was struck by a sharp comebacker from Yuli Gurriel’s left wrist during his last outing? Not necessarily.Girardi had just discovered Severino while he was rotating his right arm and stretching it – a sign of possible shoulder problems for him,”I’ve never seen that before,”Girardi explained later,”so an alarm rang and I was worried.”
In addition, employees would have had the impression that Severino would “squeeze”his pitches, not throw them with the usual ease. The man from the Dominican Republic was allowed to finish his inning after a visit to the Mound, but then it was time for work:”He wasn’t very happy that I took him out, but I’m responsible for protecting the boy” After all, Severino threw more innings this season than ever before.
While the manager then talked about running more tests at Severino – no injury had been found after the game – the pitcher asserted that he was completely fit:”I feel good, I don’t need any tests.I’m not stupid. If I feel anything, I’ll let them know. The fact that he hadn’t managed to strike out in four innings doesn’t mean anything:”I felt good and got the outs.”
If no injury is found during further tests, Severino could not be used during the usual break of four days until a possible match 6 in the night from Friday to Saturday. In view of the low pitch count, however, it might also be an option to use it in a possible match 5 on Wednesday with only three days break.
