MLB: Playoff games have record length
The MLB playoffs are heading towards the decisive phase and the games are getting longer and longer. After the regular season has already set a new record for the average game length, the teams set new records in October.
In the playoffs, the games lasted 3:35 hours on average until Tuesday, an increase of ten minutes compared to last season and 21 minutes compared to the playoffs 2015.
During the regular season, the games lasted an average of 3:05 hours this season, ESPN reports. The previous records were 2:56 hours in 2015 and 3:00 hours last year.
The shortest game of this post-season so far has been the 2-1 victory of Houston Astros in ALCS Game 2 over the New York Yankees.Justin Verlander’s Complete Game had a big influence on it.
Playoff games usually last longer than regular season games because the commercial breaks of national TV broadcasts are longer and managers use their bullpen more often and earlier.
