MLB: Astros compensate for extra-inning drama

The Houston Astros have equalized in the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Texans won game 2 with 7:5 thanks to an extra inning homerun George Springer. Previously, Super-Closer Kenley Jansen had relinquished the lead in the ninth inning.

Alex Bregman had already put the Astros in the lead with an RBI single in the second inning. Justin Verlander then flirted with a no-hitter up to the fifth inning, which he lost due to a homerun by Joc Pederson. He finally handed over his second and last hit of the game to Corey Seager in the sixth inning – a 2-run homerun to lead the Dodgers.

But they didn’t last that long. Closer Kenley Jansen came into the match in the eighth inning and had six outs ahead of them, but in the eighth, the Astros halved the gap to 3-2 by Carlos Correa’s RBI double. In the ninth inning Marwin Gonzalez finally managed to equalize by homerun.

In the tenth inning, the new Hank-Aaron-Award winner of the American League, Jose Altuve, put his team in the lead with a solo shot. Immediately afterwards, Correa raised Correa to 5:3 by homerun. But even with that, the Dodgers were not defeated. Yasiel Puig shortened per homerun to 5:4 and Kike Hernandez compensated per RBI single. In the eleventh inning, George Springer finally managed to reach the decision with a 2-Run-Homerun. The home run of Charlie Culberson with two outs didn’t change anything in the eleventh either.

Including the first three relief innings, the bullpen of the Dodgers did not give a run in 28 innings. But it was against superstar-Closer Kenley Jansen that the Astros managed to equalise. The Dodger’s reliefs also failed to find an effective remedy against the best offense of the regular season.

The Dodgers had a 3:1 lead to the start of the eighth inning and with a man on base, super-Closer Kenley Jansen was replaced. The chances of success were therefore in danger of disappearing among the guests. But the RBI single by Carlos Correa gave hope to the Astros. From then on, the offense, which had been more or less paralyzed in the series, clicked.

If he was still the flop of the game in Game 1, Springer was the match winner this time. He beat the 2-Run-Homerun in the eleventh inning, who gave the Astros the victory. Altogether was 3-5 with a walk. The lead-off hitter has thus more than rehabilitated himself for his weak performance at the start of the series.

A tough choice, but the Dodgers manager once again did it with his aggressive bullpen management. And this time it was his and his team’s doom. While his early substitution of starter Rich Hill was understandable after only four innings, the quick changes of Ross Stripling and later Brandon Morrow seemed to be exaggerated. Especially the latter would have deserved more trust, especially since Jansen would not have had to try a rare 6-Out-Save for him.
