Olympic Games 2020: Tokyo’s Olympic planners save further
The organisers of the Olympic Games 2020 in Tokyo are continuing to put a strong pressure on the cost brake. A member of the organising committee told the AFP news agency on Tuesday that the costs of new Olympic buildings had been reduced by a further 310 million euros to 1.37 billion euros as a result of the rescheduling.
Savings measures also included the redesigning of the seating in some arenas from fixed to cheaper temporary seating shells.
Since the summer of 2016, Tokyo’s organizers have had to rigorously cut costs in 2020. At that time, an investigation by the new governor Yuriko Koike had revealed that the originally planned total costs of the games had more than quadrupled – to about 25 billion euros.
The IOC also called on the organizers to take stronger cost-cutting measures because it feared that the example of Tokyo could deter future applicants.
