NFL: Seahawks break up with Freeney

The Seattle Seahawks caused a surprise on late Tuesday evening: Seattle dismisses Dwight Freeney after only a few weeks – despite their own defensive problems.

It could mean the end of his career for the 37-year-old, who had already in recent years only hired potential candidates for the title (Arizona 2015, Atlanta 2016). At the same time, it cannot be ruled out that there is still a possibility here – the New England Patriots, for example, would still have an urgent need in the Edge-Rusher area.

The decision comes as a surprise from Seahawk’s point of view, mainly due to the general defensive problems in Seattle. Not only since the injury of Cliff Avril the pass rush is lame, while the Secondary has to get by without Kam Chancellor and Richard Sherman for the rest of the season.

At this point in his career, Freeney may only be a pass rush specialist – but he still fulfils this role at the highest level. In his four games for Seattle, the veteran scored three sacks and four QB hits.
