Boxing: Charr:”Would like to apologize to the German people”

Boxing world champion Manuel Charr has ended the confusion and admitted not to have a German passport and not to have applied for one at the moment.

“I want to apologize to the German people. Over the past two years, I have relied on the work and statements of my lawyers who wanted to take care of the proceedings “, Charr told the Cologne Express:” It goes without saying that I now have to and will have to submit a new application.

According to the Express, the man from Cologne, who crowned himself World Champion of the WBA with a victory over Alexander Ustinov on Saturday, had filed a motion in 2015, but this was rejected.

Charr has not submitted a new application since then:”I have felt from the bottom of my heart as a German for a long time and I would like to fulfil all government requirements in order to finally be able to hold this piece of paper in my hands”, says Charr.

Since the victory against Ustinov, there had been confusion about the nationality of Charr, who was born in Lebanon but grew up in Germany. Also because the fight had been advertised with the fact that Charr could become the first German heavyweight boxing world champion since Max Schmeling in 1932.

On Tuesday evening, Charr said in an interview with Sky Sports News HD:”I’ve got a German passport that I’ll be getting soon, I’ll show it to everyone on the screen, and you’ll be happy.”
