Olympics 2018: Vice President Pence leads US delegation
Vice President Mike Pence will lead the US delegation to the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang (09. till 25. February).
Pence is accompanied in South Korea by his wife Karen. This was confirmed by the White House. So far, only one US President had attended Olympic Games outside the United States. That was George W. Bush at the Beijing Summer Games 2008.
For the last Winter Games in Sochi in 2014, Barack Obama had also decided not to visit the Games because of tensions with Russia. Instead, Obama appointed lesbian tennis legend Billie Jean King to the delegation. This was seen as a signal against the anti-homosexual law in Russia.
Thomas de Maiziere, the Federal Minister of the Interior responsible for sport, will travel to Pyeongchang from Germany as the highest ranking politician. The CDU politician wants to inform the German team of 12. till 14. I’d like to pay you a visit in February.
