A strange roller coaster ride at the Tennessee Titans is over: Titans and Head Coach Mike Mularkey ended their working relationship on Monday in mutual agreement.

It’s the end of a strange roller coaster ride in Tennessee. Before the regular season finale there were rumours that Mularkey would be fired if the Titans missed the playoffs. Tennessee struck Jacksonville and thus released his ticket, but the rumors still held true.

After the surprising wildcard victory in Kansas City, Mularkey then publicly declared that he had received no backing and “reckoned with the worst”. Less than 24 hours later, team owner Amy Adams Strunk announced that Mularkey would stay:”To avoid further disruptions in the near future, Mike Mularkey is our head coach and will remain our head coach in the future. We still have work to do, but I’m looking forward to our further development,”they said.

Last Sunday, I was defeated in the Patriots’ divisional round last Sunday – and now the cooperation has ended,”I would like to thank Mike Mularkey for his work here. He took over our team in a bad phase and together with (Managing Director Jon Robinson, d. Red.) established a solid basis for our organization”, Adams Strunk now announced.

In January 2016, after a short time as interim coach, Mularkey had taken over the Titans as head coach and led them to two 9-5 seasons. However, the stagnation in the development of quarterback Marcus Mariota was particularly worrying, and Mularkeys offense did not fit Mariota’s abilities at all. A hot candidate for succession is now Patriots Offensive Coordinator Josh McDaniels.
