Olympia:”The Norm” – savings programme for Olympic hosts
The International Olympic Committee has published a new programme to reduce the cost of hosting the Olympic Games.
The innovations are based on reforms of Agenda 2020, which the IOC had implemented on the initiative of IOC President Thomas Bach in 2014.
“These are the biggest savings in the history of the Olympic Games,”Bach said. It is a “fundamental rethink in the organization”. Bach said that the entire process was affected, from the candidacy to the legacy of the games, and spoke of a “new norm”.
A commission of the IOC examined all aspects of the orientation, such as accommodation, transport or technology,”We have examined whether the right services and products are provided, whether delivery times were optimal and where we can provide additional expertise,”said John Coates, Chairman of the IOC Commission.
For example, a coordination process between the national and regional authorities as well as the IOC and Tokyo 2020 has led to a reduction of the revised budget for the Summer Games by 2.2 billion US dollars (1.79 billion euros) in two years.
