Led by a strong Andreas Wellinger, a German quartet has qualified for the first ski jumping competition at the Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang.
On Thursday Wellinger won the qualification on the normal hill after a jump to 103 m in front of Polish double Olympic champion Kamil Stoch and his fellow countryman Dawid Kubacki and even stoked gold hopes for Saturday (13.35 o’ clock in the LIVETICKER).
“Beautiful qualifying, beautiful conditions, ski jumping at a high level,”Wellinger said after his impressive performance. He was able to fox his way through the training jumps,”I’ve become more stable from the jump,”he continued. At Eurosport he said:”If I do another one like that, it will be hard to beat me. But now it’s “Don’t let up.”
Richard Freitag in fourth, Markus Eisenbichler in sixth place and Karl Geiger in seventh place provided a remarkable team result,”The team presented itself very strongly. I’m very satisfied with that,”said national coach Werner Schuster. Japan’s Noriaki Kasai also made it through the qualifiers in his eighth Olympics.
However, the qualification winner does not take part in a participation in the opening ceremony at the Olympic Winter Games on Friday (12:00 a. m. at LIVETICKER):”I want to prepare for the competition. I’m here to jump competitions.”
National trainer Werner Schuster has left his athletes free to decide whether they want to participate in the opening ceremony on Saturday one day before jumping. The rest of the DSV team will take part in the ceremony around 24 hours later, despite the competition.
