Olympia: Cyber Attack during the Opening Ceremony

Unknown hacked servers of the Pocog Organizing Committee during the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang. The cyber attack caused malfunctions in an Internet TV system in the main media center.

For security reasons, the organizers then shut down several data systems. This also led to a breakdown of the company’s own website. In the meantime, customers were unable to print out their tickets for Olympic Games competitions. On Saturday morning all systems were restarted.

Pocog emphasized that the breakdowns during the opening ceremony would not have affected athletes or spectators. Nevertheless, a task force has been set up to investigate the incidents further.

Experts point out again and again that major events like the Olympic Games belong to popular targets of hackers.
