Olympia 2018: German double victory: Geisenberger wins gold ahead of Eitberger

Rodler Natalie Geisenberger has won her second Olympic gold medal in a double victory in Germany. After four races at the Olympic Sliding Center team mate Dajana Eitberger and Alex Gough from Canada, the 30-year-old Bavarian from Miesbach finished second and third.

Tatjana Huefner, Olympic champion 2010 and second behind Geisenberger 2014, dropped back to fourth place at her last Winter Games. Former German junior world champion Aileen Frisch, who has been a South Korean citizen for about a year, finished eighth.

After single-bronze 2010 in Vancouver as well as gold medal in singles and the newly introduced 2014 squadron in Sochi, Geisenberger is the most successful luge athlete in Olympic history. With her second gold medal, she also equalled Sylke Otto (2002 and 2006) and the GDR tobogganist Steffi Walter (1984 and 1988).

In the team relay on Thursday (21.30 a. m. OZ/13.30 a. m. CET) Geisenberger and the German team are also favoured.

The competition was overshadowed by an accident of Emily Sweeney (USA), who crashed into a corner nine after a mistake and had to be treated next to the track for several minutes.
