Olympics 2018: Shiffrin wins gold in giant slalom – Rebensburg misses fourth medal in fourth place
Despite a race to catch up in the second round, Viktoria Rebensburg narrowly missed her third medal in the giant slalom at the Olympic Games. Mikaela Shiffrin, slalom Olympic champion of Sochi, won the gold medal in 2:20.02 minutes ahead of the Norwegian Ragnhild Mowinckel (+0.39 seconds). The Italian Federica Brignone (+0.46) finished third. Four years ago in Sochi, Rebensburg had won bronze.
After finishing eighth in the first run, Rebensburg, who had started as the top favourite, finished fourth in 2:20.60 minutes at the Yongpyong Alpine Centre. Rebensburg missed the bronze medal by twelve hundredths of a second.
In the first run, Rebensburg was already 0.83 seconds behind Italy’s surprisingly leading Italian Manuela Mölgg in eighth place after problems in the steep slope and a driving mistake on the third last goal. Due to strong winds on Monday, the competition was postponed to Thursday.
The Bavarian had entered the race as a favourite, winning three out of seven races in her showpiece discipline and clinching two second places in the current season.
