At his last appearance at Madison Square Garden in New York, Sergey Kovalev won by knockout. against Vyacheslav Shabranskyy and regained his former title as World Champion in the semi heavyweight of the WBO. Kovalev returns to the site of his most recent triumph to defend his first title.
The semi heavyweight world championship fight between WBO World Champion Sergey Kovalev and Igor Mikhalkin will take place on 3. March at Madison Square Garden in New York. Meanwhile, an exact starting time has not yet been determined.

Kovalev is now 34 years old and held the world championship belts of the IBF, WBA and WBO associations until November 2016, but then followed a defeat against Andre Ward, which at least turned out to be extremely controversial over 12 laps. It came to the rematch of the two in June 2017 and this time it was a clear affair – Ward won after a technical knockout. and kept all three belts.
Kovalev in turn came on 25. November and won the fight for the then vacant WBO belt in the light heavyweight against Shabranskyy, which he wants to defend against Mikhalkin for the first time.
Mikhalkin also comes from Russia, but is based in Germany. Accordingly, he is unknown in the USA. Mikhalkin used to be European heavyweight champion and won his last ten fights in series. Among them was also a hard fight over twelve rounds against Doudou Ngumbu on the 2nd round. December in France.
Mikhalkin would have been in charge of a World Cup knockout match against Marcus Browne, but when the opportunity arose to fight the WBO belt against Kovalev in the States, he withdrew. It will be its premiere in the USA.
