Olympia 2018: Bob: Friedrich wins gold – at the same time as Kripps
Seven-time world champion Francesco Friedrich forgot the medal-less bankruptcy of the German bobsleigh pilots from Sochi and won the Olympic gold medal in the second round.
The 27-year-old from Oberbärenburg was Thorsten Margis in Pyeongchang after four rounds in 3:16.86 minutes with Thorsten Margis and overall World Cup winner Justin Kripps from Canada. Bronze medal went to the Latvians Oskars Melbardis (+0.05 seconds).
Already in 1998 there were two simultaneous Olympic gold medallists in the pair in Nagano. The Canadian Pierre Lueders and the Italian Günther Huber won gold at that time. Nico Walther came fourth with Christian Poser (+0.20) and Johannes Lochner/Christopher Weber dropped back from third to fifth place in the last round (+0.28).
Four years ago, the German bobsleigh pilots had been without the Olympic medal for the first time since 1964. With Friedrich’s Olympic victory, Germany equalized the number of medals from Sochi (19) on the tenth of 16 competition days.
