I, Tonya is based on the true story that kept the sporting world busy in the run-up to the 1994 Olympic Winter Games in Lillehammer.
The competition between the two American figure skaters Tony Harding and Nancy Kerrigan culminated in an assassination attempt on Kerrigan in the mid-1990s, which, after years of rivalry with her adversary Harding, had not only reached the rankings on the ice, but also had a much higher standing among the people of the USA.
For this reason, Harding’s then husband Jeff Gillooly commissioned Kerrigan to break Kerrigan’s leg with an iron bar shortly before the 1994 Olympic Games. The figure skater was injured but was able to take part in the games, where she even landed on the podium in contrast to Harding. The life and reputation of the defeated Harding were permanently damaged.
