MLB: New York Mets fear for Pitcher Jacob deGrom at the start of the season

The New York Mets are apparently worried about the availability of Starting Pitcher Jacob deGrom. The right-hander complains about back pain and is therefore not fully operational. He could even miss the start of the season.

After the health of the Mets’ starting pitcher was already a major problem in the previous year, the start of 2018 now seems to be not very promising. With deGrom, the most reliable mets pitcher of the last three years has been hit.

Whether deGrom will be fit for the opening day is not yet known, explained Manager Mickey Callaway:”We are probably still sure about that. We need to see how his throwing increases and then we’ll see what happens.”

Officially, deGrom complains about some kind of aching muscles in the back and therefore had to reduce the intensity of his litter program. On Wednesday he is scheduled to participate in a modified Bullpen session.

Concerning the conditions for deGrom’s availability at the start of the season, Callaway said:”I think five jumping training starts are the minimum if you want to hear an exact number, but he limited one:” Everyone is different. When setting up a pitcher plan for jumping training, it’s about making sure that an increase is guaranteed. Another goal is to think about how many pitches he should get. Some people start the season after throwing up to 75 pitches in one game. Five bets would be okay for that. Others want this sixth operation to reach 100. It really depends on the boy and who he is.”

However, in order to win at least five bets, deGrom would have to be on the Mound for the first time this coming Sunday. It is unclear whether this is realistic.
