Olympia 2020: Futuristic superhero is the mascot of the 2020 Summer Games

Japan’s schoolchildren have voted: On Wednesday, the mascots for the 2020 Olympic Games and the Paralympics were presented in Tokyo. With a large majority of the children decided on a futuristic, blue checkered, wide-eyed creature with pointed ears and “special powers”.

The mascot, which does not yet have a name, is well friends with its counterpart for the Paralympics. The duo was chosen in a double pack and won against two other designs. According to the Japanese organizing committee, both have special magical abilities. The design is by the Japanese artist Ryo Taniguchi.

The organizers hope to achieve similar success with their mascots as the South Koreans with “Soohorang” at the Winter Games in Pyeongchang. The white tiger proved to be a bestseller.
