MLB: Astros have to do without First Baseman Yuli Gurriel for a longer period of time

First Baseman Yuli Gurriel will probably miss the Houston Astros with a hand injury for five to six weeks. He already underwent surgery on Wednesday. Gurriel would have missed the season opener anyway due to a suspension.

According to General Manager Jeff Luhnow, it is the left hand that is injured. Luhnow also stated that they would internally look for a replacement for the season’s opening and raised the World Series ban on Gurriel’s racist gesture against Dodgers pitcher Yu Darvish.

“This is a small setback,”said Luhnow:”It will open up a chance for someone in the squad to play in the Big Leagues while Yuli recovers. We knew that this case would arise because of the suspension, but instead of five days it will now be ten or fifteen days. Whoever takes his job will have more time to prove themselves.”

As Luhnow further explained, the operation fixed a problem Gurriel had had for several years. Until this year, however, he had no complaints.

Possible alternatives at first base are, according to Luhnow and manager A. J., Hinch Tyler White, AJ Reed and JD. Davis. It is also possible that Utility-Guy Marwin Gonzalez could play First Base. But it will also be used in other positions.
