BBL: Banchi new coach in Bamberg
The German basketball champion Brose Bamberg has appointed the Italian Luca Banchi as his new coach. The 52-year-old will succeed him on his 19th birthday. Andrea Trinchieri and will lead the team into the Bundesliga play-offs. Banchi signed a contract until the end of the season with an option for another season.
“Luca Banchi is a very experienced coach who has worked at the highest level in European basketball. We are convinced that he is the right man for our current situation. On the positive side, he has already worked successfully with some of our team’s players and coaches,”said Bamberg’s sports director Ginas Rutkauskas.
Banchi resigned in mid-January after differences with the management of the Italian first division club Fiat Turin. Now the head coach, who is a master in his homeland with Montepaschi Siena (2013) and Armani Milan (2014), is under contract abroad for the first time.
Due to the precarious sporting situation, the Bambergers had broken up with their successful coach Trinchieri. The Franconians are currently only tenth in the standings and threaten to miss the championship round for the first time in 17 years. In the EuroLeague, after nine victories and fifteen defeats, the play-offs can no longer be realistically achieved.
Under Trinchieri (49) Bamberg had won the championship three times in a row since taking office in 2014/2015. In the previous year, the cup victory led to a double. After the dismissal of the Italian, assistant coach Ilias Kantzouris had temporarily taken over the position of head coach.
