Handball: All information about the World Cup 2019: venues, teams, dates and broadcasts

From 10. till 27. January 2019 the Handball World Championship will take place in Germany and Denmark. SPOX gives you all the important information about venues, teams, dates and broadcasts.

Under the motto “Come together”, the Men’s Handball World Championship will be opened in Berlin in January 2019 and culminated with the final in Copenhagen. For the first time a handball world championship will be played by two associations.

“With Germany and Denmark hosting the Men’s World Championships in 2019, this tournament will be rich in tradition, but will also present numerous innovations,”said Dr. Dr. Dr. Hübner. Hassan Moustafa, President of the International Handball Federation said:”Both nations are experienced in organising major events and will be well prepared for their next challenge. I’m sure that handball fans from all over the world will once again be fascinated by our sport at the 2019 World Cup.”

After the sobering performance of the German national team at the European Championship in Croatia, DHB questioned a lot. The highly traded team dropped out of the quarter-finals deservedly against Spain and disappointed all along the line.

Especially national coach Christian Prokop was criticized for his decisions. After a long debate, the DHB decided that the 39-year-old should fulfill his contract by 2022.

The World Handball Championship is divided into six venues. Germany has four games in Hamburg, Cologne, Munich and Berlin, while Denmark hosts games in Copenhagen and Herning.

The German team will play their preliminary round in Berlin and move to Cologne for a qualification. Hamburg is scheduled for the semi-finals, while preliminary round matches will be played in Munich without German participation.

“The Presidium of the German Handball Federation unanimously chose Berlin, Munich, Cologne and Hamburg, and thus the four largest German cities,”said Andreas Michelmann, President of the DHB.

A total of 24 teams will participate in the World Handball Championship. In the preliminary round, they are divided into four groups of six teams each. The twelve qualified teams will then fight in two main groups of six teams each for the entry into the semi-finals. This results in 96 games.

The field of participants for the World Cup is not yet complete. Eleven of the 24 nations have qualified so far.

It is not yet clear where the World Handball Championship will be held. However, there are some indications of broadcasts on free TV.

The World Cup 2015 ran on pay-TV at Sky, the World Cup 2017 as an online stream on the homepage of DHB sponsor DKB. At that time, the Qatari rights owner beIN Sports refused to sell the rights to ARD and ZDF or any other free TV channel.

On 01.03 the official sale of day tickets started. The tickets can be purchased on the official website of the event. One-day tickets for match days of the preliminary and main round are available from 15 euros. After the draw, more tickets will be on sale this summer.

In an initial sales phase, 27,000 so-called Venue Packages have already been distributed, allowing access to all games at the respective locations.
