MLB: Arizona Diamondbacks return Bullpen Cart to the Majors

The Arizona Diamondbacks will use a Bullpen Cart next season to drive the Relief Pitcher out of the pen and into the infield. This is to revive an old baseball tradition.

The 2018 season marks the 20th anniversary of the franchise in Arizona and, in addition to other activities and a special patch on the jersey sleeves, the “OnTrac Bullpen Cart” will now also accompany this special season.

“We have been working on this idea for several years. And there’s no better time to bring back the Bullpen car than this season when we’re celebrating our 20th anniversary,”said Team President and CEO Derrick Hall,”Baseball fans enjoyed seeing their favorite players entering from the bull pen with various vehicles in the 1950s to 1990s and we’re excited to bring this special delivery to Chase Field.”

Officially it was the Cleveland Indians who brought their pitcher to the Mound in 1950 with a small red car, the White Sox followed in 1951 with a buggy. However, this tradition died out over the years. The Milwaukee Brewers were the last team to use a motorcycle with sidecar for the pitcher in 1995.
