MLB: Phelps misses full season after Tommy John Surgery
David Phelps will miss the rest of the season with an elbow injury. The relief pitcher of the Seattle Mariners will undergo a Tommy John surgery.
Officially, Phelps pulled a tear in the right elbow of the collateral ligament, as the Mariners confirmed on Thursday. Phelps should thus be out of action for about 12 to 15 months.
If Phelps had been healthy, he would probably have taken on the role of Setup Man. Phelps would have been the man for the Mariners’ eighth inning behind Closer Edwin Diaz.
The injury was apparently sustained during the last pitch against the Angels on Saturday.
The Mariners had taken Phelps by trade from the Miami Marlins last July. Overall, the right-hander 2017 was 4-5 with a 3.40 ERA and 62 strikeouts over 55 2/3 innings.
