Boxing: Alvarez banned for Golovkin fight after doping test

The rematch between Gennady Golovkin and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is cancelled for the time being. The challenger was tested positive for a banned substance and now faces doping allegations.

After two positive doping tests, Alvarez is not released for an official fight for the time being and cannot join the ring against Golovkin on May 5. He had announced his retirement late Tuesday evening.

On April 18, Canelo will now be heard before the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

The boxer himself assumes that he has taken the proven calf fattening product Clenbuterol via his diet and denies intentional doping.

ESPN expects a suspension of six months, so that the fight could only take place in autumn at the earliest. For this, however, Canelos willingness to cooperate would be necessary. And Golovkin would have to agree to a new approach first.
