NBA: NBA mourns Gregg Popovich’s wife Erin

Erin Popovich, wife of Spurs coach Gregg Popovich, died at the age of 67. Stars from the league reacted dismayed.

The franchise announced that Erin Popovich died early Wednesday (local time) after fighting against an illness over a “longer period”.

“She was a strong, wonderful, friendly and intelligent woman who gave people love, support and much joy,” said General Manager R.C. Buford.

Gregg Popovich had been married to Erin for over 40 years. They have two children and two grandchildren.

When the news made the rounds in the NBA, many superstars reacted with dismay. Kevin Durant of the Warriors said: “I want Pop to know that the whole NBA family supports him. It’s bigger than the game, it’s more important than victory or defeat. I feel for Pop and his family.”

LeBron James told TNT: “I’m such a big fan of pop. I love him. It’s a tragedy. I wish him and his family all the best and strength. “We as the NBA family stick together, even if we play each other every night.”

Next night the Spurs will play the third playoff match against the Warriors (3.30 a.m.). Whether Pop will be on the sideline is not yet clear.
