MLB: Home Plate Umpire Jerry Layne injured by foul ball
Home Plate Umpire Jerry Layne had to leave the game between the Los Angeles Angels and the Boston Red Sox (8:2 Boston) early. A foul ball from Mike Trout hit him in the elbow.
Layne was still lucky in the misfortune, because as an X-ray examination showed, nothing was broken. Layne merely suffered a deep bruise, as the Angels announced.
The injury already happened in the first inning, so the Umpire crew had to continue early with three of them. First Base Umpire Greg Gibson took over for Layne behind the board.
The situation required a longer interruption, which Red Sox pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez bridged with numerous warm-up pitches in order not to cool down.
Layne is 59 years old and has been active in the MLB as Umpire since 1989.
