MLB: Matt Harvey flies out of Mets rotation: “I am really pissed off”

Mickey Callaway, manager of the New York Mets (14-6), has kicked pitcher Matt Harvey off the starting rotation. As Callaway announced on Saturday, Harvey will act out of the bullpen starting Tuesday.

“I have to accept that decision,” Harvey said. “I don’t have to agree, but I have to watch to get back to where I can help the team the most. And as a starter.”

After a solid first game, Harvey allowed six runs against Atlanta Braves in the first three innings last Thursday. In 26 innings, he took as many hits, four of which were home runs.

“On an anger scale of one to ten, I’m on a ten. I’m really pissed,” said Harvey. “But my performance was not good. I’ll do everything I can to get back on the press.”

His manager Callaway believes that Harvey can continue to help the Mets in the future. “He’ll be back at Starts,” said Callaway. “Sure, he’s not happy about it (the transfer to the bullpen, note), but I don’t think he’s discouraged. “Motivation prevails to show everyone that he has what it takes to be a starter.”

With 14 wins out of the first 20 games, the Mets are currently leading the NL East. Philadelphia Phillies (13-7) and Atlanta Braves (12-8) are one and two games behind.
