MLB: Bryant leaves game after pitch to the head
A second of shock at the Chicago Cubs. In the 9-7 win over the Colorado Rockies, Third Baseman Kris Bryant was hit directly in the first inning by a pitch on the head and then had to be replaced. An exact diagnosis has yet to be made.
Colorado pitcher German Marquez had hit Bryant on the helmet with a 96 mph fastball, whereupon Bryant left the field with the help of coaches. A cut above his left eye was also visible.
As for his condition after the game, manager Joe Maddon made it clear that he was “as well as expected” after such a goal. “I haven’t heard anything terrible, but he’s still under observation. I haven’t heard the word “concussion.”
Bryant himself was not available for the reporters after the game, but flew with the team to Cleveland, where the Cubs will start a series on Tuesday.
“It scared the hell out of me, to be honest,” said Cubs hitting coach Chili Davis about the situation. “This guy is a huge part of our team.”
