MLB: Jenny Cavnar is the first woman to comment on MLB on TV since 1993

Jenny Cavnar made MLB history on Monday. The journalist commented on the Colorado Rockies’ game against the San Diego Padres as a play-by-play commentator. This makes her the first woman since 1993 to perform the play-by-play role in the MLB on television.

“She knows,” MLB expert and ex-pitcher Dallas Braden told MLB.com, “I think by the third inning at the latest, once all the niceties have been exchanged, you’ll forget who’s at the microphone. You will learn from the baseball game and enjoy the stories that are told to you. And that says a lot about their expertise.”

Usually Cavnar moderates the preliminary and follow-up reports of the Rockies games, and occasionally she also intervened as an expert on TV and radio. Cavnar has worked for the Padres since 2012 and was previously a reporter for the Padres for four years.

Jenny Cavnar is on a list of only a few women in front of her. In 1993 it was Gayle Gardner who was the first woman ever to work as the main commentator on television in the MLB. She commented on your game between the Rockies and Cincinnati Reds.

These days Suzyn Waldman is working alongside John Sterling for the New York Yankees as a co-commentator on the radio. Jessica Mendoza is also an expert alongside Alex Rodriguez and commentator Matt Vasgersian for Sunday Night Baseball on ESPN.
