MLB: “Swing Man” Fowler leads St. Louis Cardinals to 13th inning victory

The St. Louis Cardinals (15-9) caught up twice on Thursday and beat the New York Mets (15-8) after four extra innings. Right Fielder Dexter Fowler was again moved by Manager Mike Matheny in the Batting Order, this time he was in the right place at the right time.

St. Louis were already trailing 2-0 in the seventh inning, and in the tenth section the Mets also took a 3-2 lead. Center Fielder Tommy Pham, who had injured his head the day before, equalized the score with his run after a two-out double by Jose Martinez.

Fowler, who hit in fifth place, made the decisive single that Martinez used to run to the 4:3 final score a short time later.

“I’m a real swing man, I beat everywhere,” Fowler said. Manager Matheny has been experimenting with the batting order over the past few days to counteract the weak start to the season. “Whether first, second – I try to play all nine positions,” said Fowler.

Relief pitcher John Gant pitched innings eleven to 13 for the Cardinals and did not give a single hit at 35 pitches. Gant was ordered up on short notice by the Triple-A team from Memphis and ensured the second victory of his career after June 2016.

Pham, whose use with his injury was questionable for a long time, spoke after the match of a half as fierce wounding. “I just got really lucky,” Pham said. “A big thank you goes to my therapeutic Do-Rag.”
