MLB: Cardinals put Yadier Molina on Disabled List after operation
The St. Louis Cardinals have put all-star catcher Yadier Molina on the Disabled List. He’ll be out for at least four weeks after surgery.
Officially, the Cardinals spoke of a “pelvic injury with traumatic haematoma”. Molina was hit by a foul tip on Saturday after a 102-mile-an-hour fast ball by Reliever Jordan Hicks against the Chicago Cubs in the groin area and went down immediately. It had to be replaced after prolonged treatment.
“You always hope it’s one of those goals that only hurts for a few minutes,” explained Cardinal manager Mike Matheny, who was a catcher himself: “But you could see it was on a different level.
According to Bengie Molina, Yadier’s brother, who was also active as a catcher in the MLB for a long time, the operation lasted 45 minutes and doctors saved both testicles of the 35-year-old.
As General Manager John Mozeliak later explained, Molina will now rest for a week before he starts training again. “We have to look from day to day, but hopefully not too long,” Mozeliak said.
