MLB: Yankees draw level with Red Sox after close victory

The New York Yankees (25-10) have equaled their arch-rival in the American League East with a hard-fought 3-2 win over the Boston Red Sox (25-10). Giancarlo Stanton hit two home runs and Aaron Judge provided the decisive hit.

After beating Boston with 7 ½ games in mid-April, the Yankees have now won the 16th of their last 17 games and are tied.

“We still have until October to play. There is no panic,” Aaron Judge told reporters. “You never want to lose so many games early in the season, but we trusted our team. The boys started to feel good and then it worked. It’s still early, it’s still May. We just need to stay focused and keep working.”

Crucial this time was an RBI single with invited bases by Judge against Joe Kelly, who had just replaced him and entered the Yankee Stadium under resounding booing shouting – in the first series between the two arch-rivals in April he had triggered a brawl with a hit-by-pitch against Tyler Austin.

“You never forget something like that, of course, but we have to look forward,” said Judge in the duel with Kelly. “You can’t live in the past. You can’t change it. It happened, it’s been worked through, and now it’s time to play baseball.”

Neil Walker scored the 3-2 run while Gleyber Torres was kicked off second base. Enough for the bullpen of the Yankees, who saved the lead over time. Aroldis Chapman finally got his eighth save of the season.

The Yankees had taken the 2-0 lead through two solo Homuns by Giancarlo Stanton. For Stanton, who now has nine long balls in the season, it was the third multi-homerun game of the season.

“As long as it helps us win games, it’s good. And your opponent doesn’t matter,” Stanton said to his two home runs. He admitted, however: “Of course it’s always a bit hornier with a rivalry like this.”

On the mound Luis Severino collected eleven strikeouts in 6+ innings, but after a lead-off single by Eduardo Nunez in the seventh inning he left the mound and was deprived of the statistical victory, since Reliever David Robertson subsequently handed an RBI triple to Mookie Betts, which had provided for the 2:2 equaliser.

Game 2 of the three-game series will take place on Thursday night at 1.05 am (live on DAZN). However, the Red Sox will not send David Price into the race as planned, but Rick Porcello, who was actually scheduled for Thursday. Price was canceled due to deafness in the throwing hand. Meanwhile, New York is sending Masahiro Tanaka on the mound.
