NBA: Media: Klay Thompson and Warriors talk about extension

The Golden State Warriors and Klay Thompson have probably already talked about a possible extension of the shooting guard. A possible early extension could save the reigning champion a lot of money.

That’s what Marcus Thompson from The Athletic reports. According to this, the Warriors and Thompson already negotiated an extension in China in October. There it was agreed that the talks would continue after this season.

An early extension would be ideal, especially for the dubs, as Golden State could save a lot of luxury tax. Thompson could make a maximum of 121 million for the next five years. Should the Guard actually become a free agent, a Max deal with the Dubs would be possible for up to 188 million (5 years).

Yes, but Stephen Curry and (probably) Kevin Durant soon have a Max contract in their pocket, the Warriors would probably not want to pay this tariff for Thompson. If Klay wants to change teams, he could make $139 million over four years. If you add in the salary for the coming season, that would be 158 million.

Thompson has been associated with the Los Angeles Lakers and the Philadelphia 76ers from time to time during the season, although the Guard emphasized that he likes to play for the Warriors. “It’s hard for me to imagine playing for another team,” he said Bleacher Report.

The 28-year-old was selected eleventh by the Warriors in 2011 and has been named All-Star four times since. He won the championship with the Dubs in 2015 and 2017.
