MLB: Brewers-Rookie shines in debut against Rockies
The Milwaukee Brewers ((24-17) won 7:3 against the Colorado Rockies (22-19) on Sunday and were particularly pleased about one: rookie pitcher Freddy Peralta, who set several records.
Peralta held a no-hitter into the sixth inning on his Major League debut, collecting 13 strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings (H, 2 BB). He set a new franchise rookie record. He is also Milwaukee’s youngest starting pitcher since Yovani Gallardo in 2007.
What’s more, Peralta is only the fifth pitcher since 1908 to serve at least twelve strikeouts in his debut with 13 strikeouts. Last time Stephen Strasburg succeeded with 15 Ks against the Pirates 2010.
“My pitching coach just told me to smile, breathe and pitch. And that’s what I did,” said Peralta about his debut.
Meanwhile, Third Baseman Travis Shaw and First Baseman Jesus Aguilar (3 RBI) provided the necessary offensive with home runs. Center Fielder Christian Yelich contributed two more RBI.
Aguilar, on the other hand, was enthusiastic about his pitcher: “It was incredible. I saw their second baseman DJ LeMahieu or Charlie Blackmon so helpless. You didn’t see the ball. It was really incredible. These are really good hitters and he dominated them with his fast ball.”
The Brewers won the four-game series against Colorado 3-1 and are currently half a game ahead of the Cardinals and Pirates in the National League Central. The Rockies, on the other hand, are second in the West NL, two and a half games behind Arizona.
