MLB: New York Yankees spend the night at the airport

The New York Yankees spent the night from Wednesday to Thursday at Virginia airport. Earlier, a double header against the Washington Nationals had been cancelled due to weather conditions.

The trip to Washington/D.C. was a complete failure for the New York Yankees. Not only were they unable to play one of two matches against the Washington Nationals due to the weather, there were also problems on their departure.

The team should have left Virginia on Wednesday evening from Dulles International Airport for Kansas City/Missouri to start a series against the Royals on Friday evening. But the flight was postponed for almost twelve hours.

Since hotel beds were hardly available in the late evening, the Yankees decided to spend the night either in the plane or in the terminal.

General Manager Brian Cashman explained that several factors led to the situation. On the one hand there was a mechanical problem with the aircraft, on the other hand there were storms in the area.

“It was a chain of unfortunate circumstances,” Cashman told Newsday. Departure was then at 9.30 o’clock local time on Thursday. “Luckily, we were free on Thursday,” Cashman remarked.
