MLB: Angels postpone next start of Pitcher Shohei Ohtani

The Los Angeles Angels postpone the next start of Shohei Ohtani as pitcher. Originally it was planned that he would pitch against the New York Yankees in the Bronx on Sunday.

Manager Mike Scioscia announced the decision on Thursday, citing Schonung as the reason for the move. This does not lead to the Japanese pitcher duel with Yankees right-hander Masahiro Tanaka.

Scioscia admitted, however, that Ohtani was available as a designated hitter and therefore could possibly meet Tanaka at least on the record. When Ohtani will pitch next time is not yet known.

Ohtani’s last start was against Tampa Bay Rays on May 20. He won the game and only allowed two runs on six hits in 7 2/3 innings – season’s best value. He also pitched 110 pitches for the Angels for the first time.

In the last three games the Angels used Ohtani as designated hitter. Against the Blue Jays on Wednesday in the ninth inning, he made up the late equaliser for a 5-4 win in Toronto.

In 26 games as DH, Ohtani beats .319 with six home runs and 19 RBI.
