MLB: Rookie becomes match winner for Yankees
Rookie Gleyber Torres was once again the match winner for the New York Yankees (34-17) in their home win over the Houston Astros (35-21) on Tuesday. The Yankees did not equalize until the ninth inning, before the youngster decided the game in the tenth inning.
It was another wild ride at Yankee Stadium. After the Astros won the opening three games series behind an outstanding Justin Verlander, the Yankees fought back.
Yankees-Outfielder Brett Gardner (4-5, 2 R, 3 RBI), who started the game in the first inning with a solo Homun and in the ninth inning with a 2-run shot, was the clear winner.
“I think it was a really good victory today,” Gardner said afterwards. “We didn’t exactly play our best game. But every time you make five errors and still win, you’re happy to take that with you.”
In the tenth inning it was Torres who finished the match with a walkoff RBI single with two outs against Pitcher Brad Peacock. Rookie colleague Miguel Andujar, who scored three runs in the game, was also the final run for the Bronx Bombers.
“It’s amazing,” Torres said after the game. “Gardner did a great job, his two home runs are impressive. Meanwhile, I was just waiting for my chance to help the team. I saw Andujar beat the double. Then I just tried to do my job and enjoy it and help my team. And after that, I just enjoyed the moment. That was the most important thing for me.”
Before that, however, the hosts made the game difficult for themselves and fabricated five errors. Two were Torres, plus errors from Andujar, Pitcher CC Sabathia and Catcher Gary Sanchez.
Sanchez, however, also provided the most spectacular – and curious – play of the game. In the tenth inning Astros-Outfielder Tony Kemp reached the first base with a walk and then came through a wild pitch of Yankees-Closer Aroldis Chapman the second base.
Chapman then fired a fast ball at over 100 miles per hour over his catcher and Kemp made it to third base. But the Yankees were lucky, because the ball bounced directly from the backstop back to Sanchez, who then threw him to Andujar on the third base and thus caught Kemp for the third out in the inning.
