NHL: Washington Capitals triumph over Vegas Golden Knights
The Washington Capitals have won the Stanley Cup for the first time in their club’s history. With a 4:3 against the Las Vegas Knights and a 4:1 overall victory in the best-of-seven series, the team of German national goalkeeper Philipp Grubauer secured the silver trophy.
“It’s amazing, I don’t know what to say. All that matters is that we finally won the title,” said Alexander Ovechkin after the game.
The 32-year-old Russian scored the interim 2-1 lead and was crowned MVP of the play-offs after the match with the Conn Smythe trophy.
The Knights turned the game into a 3-2 lead by the end of the second period, before Devante Smith-Pelly and Lars Eller brought the Capitals to a decisive front in the final section.
The Knights, who made it to the finals in their debut season, did not recover from this gap.
Grubauer did not play in the decisive game, but with 35 games in the regular season and two play-offs, he also has his share of the title.
After Uwe Krupp, Dennis Seidenberg and Tom Kühnhackl, Grubauer is the fourth German to win the Stanley Cup.
