MLB: Legend visits Panama’s national leader in Sotchi

On Monday, Panama (against Belgium, from 5 p.m. in the LIVETICKER) will be competing in a World Cup for the first time ever. The country’s greatest athlete, baseball legend Mariano Rivera, is meanwhile also on site and has already attended a few games.

Rivera, the legendary closer of the New York Yankees, visited the match between Portugal and Spain in Sotchi on Friday. There he met a former opponent, wrestler Miguel Montero, who is currently a free agent. He in turn immortalized the meeting of the two MLB stars on Instagram.

At Fisht Stadium in Sotchi, Panama will play for the first time on Monday, their opponent will be Belgium. Rivera visited his compatriots before the game, however, which led to another photo of ESPN Deportes journalist Fernando Palomo on Twitter – five of the team’s players posed in Yankees jerseys with Rivera’s number 42 and the superstar’s personal dedications.

Rivera played a total of 19 years in the MLB for the Yankees and holds the record for most saves (652) in the history of the league. He won the World Series five times with New York and is considered a safe candidate for admission to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2019.
